One of the hundreds of term’s in PACE’s Digital and Social Media Dictionary is #hashtag. A hashtag is a way to tag content on a social network. A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a “#.” Example: #yourhashtag. Hashtags are commonly used to show that a tweet, a Twitter message, is related to an event or trending topic, online or offline. Hashtags unify people talking about a topic so that anyone searching for that topic may be more likely to see that tweet:
Ex: During the NBA Finals in June 2013 people commonly used the hashtags #NBAPlayoffs or #TheHeat to be unified with others talking about that topic. The tweet below is an example of one that uses hashtags and the words in blue are all clickable.
